Mexico: Forecasts for the guava harvest estimate it at 100,000 tons

Over 100,000 tonnes of guava will be harvested this year in Mexico due to heavy rains, said the producers of the fruit.

The President of the Association of Exporters of Irradiated Fruits of Mexico (Asefimex ), Alberto Diaz Lopez said at the Global Agribusiness Forum that the guava is grown on a rough, hilly terrain, which prevents their crops from being affected by the atypical torrential rains.

He added that historically the rains have favoured producers of this fruit, thanks to the topography used for harvesting it.

"Here, in Aguascalientes, production is higher than in the previous year, it is estimate to be about 25 percent higher. Production has been affected by drought for the last two years. This year we were favoured by the winter weather and rain," he said.

As for the guava production in the municipality of Calvillo, Aguascalientes, he said that the harvest had already started and that the first shipments to the United States had been sent two weeks ago.
