Spain: Summer campaign of Murcia pepper successful

According to the pepper auctions in Murcia the Summer campaign that began in April and which is now coming to an end was a great success. "This is one of the best campaigns I remember in my twenty years of experience in this sector, in terms of volume, quality, and prices, " said José María Madrid, who works at Murcia's Mercagrisa's auction.

This year, both the Clovi pepper variety as well as the California one have been traded between 40 and 50% higher than in the 2012 campaign. The yellow California, the most demanded and valued pepper variety, especially in the Eastern European countries, has reached prices above 2.40/2.50 € a kilo, while the green and red California have surpassed the 2.00€ per kilo several times.

"We've certainly noticed a growth in demand from the Eastern countries and Russia, which has been more demanding in quality, this year," he says.

The Lamuyo or red and green Clovi has been traded above 1.30 and 1.40 € per kilo, mainly for the national market, Italy and France.

Small amounts of artichoke are already being trade, but producers are waiting for lower temperatures in order to achieve the quality and the volume needed to start the winter season, which, according to Jose Maria, "we are awaiting with great enthusiasm and positivism after the summer campaign's great results."

Mercagrisa will be attending the next Fruit Attraction 2013 at stand 7EO3, from October 16 to the 18 in Madrid.
