According to the DRA Piura

Peru: The acreage of table grapes increased by 30% in Piura

The area planted with table grapes in Piura increased 30% this year in relation to the previous one, according to the Director of the Agricultural Competitiveness of the Regional Bureau of Agriculture of the northern region, Axel Herrera.

This year the region has 4,800 hectares of table grapes. 80 % of these areas correspond to the red globe variety, which is directly exported to markets such as the United States, Europe, Asia, Chile and Canada.

"The increase in areas of grapes planted is an answer to the unsatisfied demand and little supply that there is between mid-October and mid-November, a time when only Piura exports,m" he said. He also pointed out that new companies, with Peruvian and Chilean investment, installed their grapevines in the dry forests of the department. Pumped well water is the most widely irrigation technology used in that area, he explained.

"We expect to export 35,000 MT this campaign," he added.
