Spain: 25% drop in Cuenca's onion production

This will not be a good year for the province of Cuenca's onion campaign. A few days before it finishes, UPA informed that production volumes this year will drop by around 25%.

UPA blames these losses on the government's water policy, which in the past two years has resulted in a 50% fall in production, but also on the low temperatures in May and June, which combined with the rains in March have prevented the product from completing its ripening process.

UPA expects this fall in production volumes to be compensated by prices, which currently stand at around 15 cents per kilo, ensuring a minimum profitability for the growers, but which may rise even more.
