Spain: New study group on horticultural transport by rail

A study group on horticultural transport will be put into motion this week by Ferrmed in collaboration with the Murcian Association of Logistics (AML).

Technical director of AML, Pedro López, explained that "the gradual implementation of the third track into the current railway lines of the Mediterranean Corridor and the future connection between Murcia and Almeria open important and consequential possibilities for the transport of horticultural products by rail."

For this reason, the association understands that it is vital to analyse the advantages that this new connection with the rest of Europe can offer in terms of quality, costs, shipping times and possibilities for market expansion, stated López.

The creation of a Working Group with Ferrmed members interested in the topic was proposed, with the idea, as stressed by Pedro López that the Working Group turns into a trans-European forum for the transport of horticultural products by rail, with a periodicity to be established, which would meet at least three times per year and whenever the circumstances advised it.

AML's technical director explained that, "this Working group will be open, and consequently, any organisations or companies related to the business, as well as railway and logistics operators, will be welcome to attend it as guests."

The first meeting, held on 2 October in Valencia, Spain, dealt with topics such as: short and medium term goals, designation of a coordination secretary, starting statistical information and the plan of action, among others.
