"Transportes Frio Almansa: "it is a shameful situation"

Spain: The recession increases non-payments in the transport sector

After a satisfactory Summer fruit campaign with good weather in Europe and the usual "halt" that takes place in late summer, the export market has its hopes set on the autumn-Winter season, which is now slowly starting, mainly with citrus, seed fruit and vegetables.

Based in Almansa, in the Spanish province of Albacete, the company Transportes Frio Almansa is mainly devoted to the refrigerated transport of fruits, vegetables and frozen products all over Europe, although it is specialised in Benelux, France and Italy.

"This year, we expect another good Winter campaign, being faithful to our clients and strengthening the relationship we already have with them to continue growing together," affirms Rafael Serrano, owner of Transportes Frio Almansa.

However, there are many challenges ahead for the transport sector within this context of financial crisis, in which imports have become stronger than exports.

"Spain has for a few years now been a country in crisis, and taking into account its lower spending power, its purchases of wares and raw goods have gradually decreased, so naturally, its import share has dropped," he explains. "Nevertheless, and despite the difficulties, we have decided to start a new temperature-controlled import groupage service this year from Belgium and the Netherlands."

Another important aspect to take into consideration, and which has already sent many companies out of business, according to Rafael Serrano, are non-payments.

"Nowadays one must be careful in choosing who to work with. It has always been the case, but for the past two years, we see an increasing number of people not paying their bills, and sadly, they are not always customers who are unable to pay, but who refuse to pay. They postpone for months, and in the end, the company changes its name or ceases to exist. This causes a chain reaction, because the one who does not get paid, cannot pay its debts. It is a shameful situation, unworthy of a country like Spain, as it leads to the disappearance of small and medium transport companies, which are much more vulnerable. Luckily, thanks to our financial department's good management, we have a small percentage of non-payments."

Transportes Frio Almansa also has a washing and tyre replacement service for trucks

"At Frio Almansa, customer service is regarded as highly important; it is personalised and focused on good communication, information and meeting of the services and duties agreed upon. In the medium term, we wish to increase our fleet and we are studying the possibility of opening a warehouse."
