Leon van Meir:

"High price hindered onion sales"

Onion sales have been difficult for a while. "The onions have been too expensive and that impeded sales. In the meantime sales are picking up" Leon van Meir from the onion wholesalers, van Meir says. Van Meir do not export themselves, but supply onions to about ten exporters directly, who supply the whole world. More than hundred growers are part of the onion pool of van Meir.

"I hear from my clients that destinations in Africa and Malaysia are back in the market. Eastern Europe has carefully started asking a little for processing," Leon says. "It is difficult to say how sales will develop in the coming weeks. One cannot predict the market. The prices for the farmer are a little under pressure at about 15 cents."

With prices per bale there is a division between the middle size (about 19 cents) and the coarse onions (about 25 cents). The difference in price started during the last week and will remain like this for a while. All in all prices decreased quite a bit. Fortunately the quality of the onions is good," Leon concludes.
