Spain: Mediterranean Corridor deemed essential for vegetable exports

The president of Andalusia's Government, Susana Díaz, declared the Mediterranean Corridor, and its connection with Almeria, essential for the transport of horticultural products and stressed that she will convey this assessment to the Central Government. Susada Díaz pointed out that, "at this particular moment, our agricultural sector needs a rail network able to handle the demand for its products."

Díaz, who met in Almeria with representatives of the horticultural sector, also gathered all petitions issued in connection with the negotiations for the CMO for Fruits and Vegetables to take place in Brussels on 17 and 18 October.

Andalusia's president is confident that the Minister of Agriculture, Miguel Arias Cañete, will competently present the arguments, and that, "these will encourage the European Commission to make decisions that are both fair and favourable for the interests of Andalusia and Almeria's agricultural sector."

Díaz insisted that, "the Andalusian Government has been listening and collecting the sector's demands, because we believe that there are things that can be improved in this negotiation."

The president also discussed with the horticultural sector "the need for a concentration of supply, for the achievement of fair prices and for internationalization."

Susana Díaz also mentioned how Almeria's horticultural sector generates 50,000 direct and indirect jobs in the province.
