Italy: It's Nando marron and Nella chestnut season again

In ten days' time, marrons (Nando marrons) and chestnuts (Nella chestnuts) coming from Mitica Srl - Centro Frutta Castiglione, located in Castiglione dei Pepoli (BO) in the Apennines between Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna, halfway between Bologna and Florence - will be available on the market.

The company dates back to the 1960s and since then, has grown and specialised in various products, among which are marrons and chestnuts, which are the feather in its cap.

The produce processed in the plants of the company reaches a total volume of 500 tons. It arrives from both local production areas in the Apennines and from areas in Central-Southern Italy (Viterbo, Avellino, etc.). In the last few years, the range was integrated by produce coming from Turkey, Portugal and Spain.

Processing is made up of different phases: checks on the produce, elimination of fruits not suitable for consumption by immersion in tanks full of water and a first manual selection of the graded product. The produce is then weighed on automatic scales and packed in either bags or bins. The size of packets and the labels can be customised upon request of the client.

The equipment to select and pack marrons and chestnuts can process up to 20 tons of produce per day.

The clientele of Centro Frutta Castiglione is very much diversified- marrons and chestnuts reach wholesalers, retailers and dealers specialised in roasted chestnuts. For some of these, supplies go on until April, whereas retailers generally require the product only until Christmas.

One of the processing phases of Nando marrons: packets ready to be distributed.

During the sales season, the produce is stocked in modified atmosphere cold storage units in order to preserve its quality. Only a part of the goods is destined to industrial processing and the amount depends on the quality of the produce.

Company managers tell FreshPlaza that they "would like to increase our presence abroad, as we already supply clients in Switzerland, Austria and Germany, working with fixed-price contracts."
