Syposium on environmental performance of Dutch agriculture sector-Sept 27th
OECD countries were recently assessed on the environmental performance of their agricultural sectors since 1990, covering soil, water, air and biodiversity. Based on this analysis, LEI Wageningen UR has put the environmental performance of Dutch agriculture in an international perspective.
Agriculture uses large amounts of land and water, and therefore has a substantial impact on the environment. Improvements have been made in nutrient, pesticide, energy and water management, using less of these inputs per unit volume of output. The positive signs partly can be attributed to better integration of environmental
aspects in farmers’ decision making since the early 1990s.
The indicators inform policy makers and society on the state and trends in agri-environmental conditions, and can provide a valuable aid to policy analysis to meet future challenges.
