Chile: Life Cycle Assessment of Sustainable Packaging

The meeting, held at Fundación Chile, analyzed key issues around sustainability and its relevance to the industry, delving into the extraction of materials, packaging design, manufacturing, transport and use.

In order to provide a complete picture of the processes involved in the packaging life cycle, Fundación Chile, along with Walmart Chile and Packaging Center of Chile (CENEM) summoned and ran with Sustainable Packaging Coalition and Triciclos, the workshop "Fundamentals of Sustainable Packaging" on December 6th.

The objective was to analyze key issues around sustainability and its relevance to that industry, deepening the extraction of materials, packaging design manufacturing, transportation, use and end of cycle.

Nicola Borregaard, manager of Energy and Climate Change of Fundación Chile, said that "through this workshop we were able to learn about key aspects of the sustainability of packaging and the strategies needed to create packaging that is
beneficial for both people and for businesses."

Meanwhile, Alberto Calderon, president of Cenem, said that "for our partners and the entire container industry and packaging, it is very important to incorporate sustainability attributes to the production and design of these." Meanwhile,
Marina Hermosilla, Walmart Chile Sustainability manager, spoke of the importance for companies to have tools for more sustainable products and align with their packaging goals and objectives.

Subsequently, Gonzalo Muñoz, CEO of Triciclos, spoke about the current state of recycling in Chile, showing the difficulties and obstacles that exist and proposals to improve the system and logistics.

Through the analysis of real examples and interactive discussions, participants were familiarized with the concepts to see how these can be applied to all facets of a running business. In this line, Minal T. Mistry, manager, of Green Blue, spoke about sustainability and the balance of the variables, deepening the environmental impacts associated with packaging.

The workshop "Fundamentals of Sustainable Packaging", has been done since 2008 and is organized by the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, a project managed by Green Blue, a nonprofit organization that provides scientific advice to companies to promote more sustainable manufacturing.
