Guy De Roeck of DR Fresh:

Belgium: “No complaints in the carrot industry”

“There’s nothing to complain about in the carrot business at the moment,” says Guy De Roeck of DR Fresh in Dendermonde, Belgium. “Both price and demand are decent. The only issue we have is the large amount of soil in the creates. Harvesting was tricky: because of the weather, big chunks of mud stuck to the carrots. We don’t know yet what this will do to sales; so far customers are very happy with the quality.”

“Export prices are good as well, and I expect them to remain so. The carrots we’re handling now come directly from storage, upping costs. At least we have been able to harvest all the crops; in Belgium and Germany many carrots are still in the ground. It’s too wet to get them out. It remains to be seen if these crops make it to the market.”

“We are secretly hoping that England will take some of our stocks, because of the lousy weather conditions over there. But on the whole, export is good.
