South African litchi harvest in full swing at HL Hall
Graham Ballard, Technical Manager at H.L Hall and Sons reports, “We expect this season to be another promising one with a projected export volume of over 330 000 cartons of the Mauritius variety. 60% comprises of Halls’ own, home grown fruit, produced in the Nelspruit and Tzaneen regions with the balance coming from the current early supply out of the Onderberg region. This entire volume comes from just five select farming operations and is packed in three well managed packing facilities.
Through this defined supply chain, H.L Hall and Sons provides sound assurance around quality, Good Agricultural Practice, food safety and continuity of supply.”
Such availability gives marketeers HL Hall International the ability to provide an offering of good quality fruit that spans the entire South African Mauritius cultivar season. The anticipated volume positions Halls as the largest supplier of the Mauritius cultivar out of South Africa.
Furthermore, the South African industry is a proud host of the 4th World Lychee Symposium, currently underway in the Nelspruit region of Mpumalanga province. This event provides a rare opportunity for the South African litchi industry to showcase its progressive nature through a wealth of expertise in areas of production, packing, logistics, marketing, technical, research and development. As a proud member of the South African Litchi Grower’s Association (S.A.L.G.A), Ballard and the team at Halls Mataffin farm will be hosting a field day on Friday 7th December for delegates of the nearby Symposium to visit their orchards and pack house and to share their findings of effective litchi production which now spans the past five decades .
