Mexico: Agroparks exports USD 450 million in peppers to the U.S.

The agricultural production model under the Agroparks' model is already showing results. Currently 450 million Mexican pesos in pepper have been exported, especially from Tamazula, Etzatlán and Jalisco.

These new protected agriculture schemes are permanent in nine municipalities of Jalisco where have they have been installed, said the head of the Ministry of Rural Development of Jalisco (Seder), Álvaro García Chávez.

He said that this model is an example of the new business model in Jalisco that aims to adopt successful technology and respond to market demand in an organized manner by its producers.

As for sweet peppers, he said that the production goes to America, because in Mexico there is not enough demand for this vegetable.

Raúl Pérez, responsible for the support given to Agroparks from Seder, said that these schemes of protected agriculture ensure safety and traceability of the products. Also they have brought a major change in how farmers work, valuing team work.

He explained that the team work is based on creating integrated companies for marketing.

Among the highlights of the technology package of protected agriculture, as observed in a guided tour, is the high productivity that Agropark has. A production of 15 kilograms per square meter in a hydroponic planting (the plant grows in a coir substrate and not on the ground) is achieved per cycle, representing an average of 3.4 plants per square meter.

Besides the peppers with the colors already known (green, yellow, orange and red), currently there is a pilot phase with other colors that are intended to market as "purple, chocolate and mint."

García Chávez recalled that the Agroparks' model had several success stories, such as the one we have in Almeria, Spain, which is a source of supply to various European and Asian countries. He emphasized that this model now in Jalisco will fulfill its role of supplying with its production, both the domestic and the export market.
