The future of Chilean raspberries

Specialists from various institutions gathered at the seminar "Technological and Market Productive Prospects, for Raspberries Producers", organized by the Office of Agricultural Studies and Policies (Odepa) and the Ministry of Agriculture, held in Inia Quilamapu in Chillan (Chile).

Odepa´s director, Gustavo Rojas, announced the Ministry's policy, which is mainly oriented at opening markets for national crops, so to innovate and support producers. Although, there are several aspects that must be provided to achieve better yields, like development of better varieties and the availability of skilled labor for harvesting. Thus, a change in visa policy is being evaluated, to allow foreigners to work in Chile for the harvest period.

He also made reference to some characteristics that require attention, such as replacement of existing varieties, which in the Region correspond largely to Heritage, a variety that has been present in the area since the 80s, and now has been replaced by better performing varieties in other producing countries.

Maria Ines Gonzalez, researcher said that the variety of plants in nurseries is not very good, which is why it is expected that current varieties will be replaced.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Agriculture, José Manuel Rebolledo, said that currently the best conditions for the Region to become an agricultural power exist. Being at the geographical center of the country, the Region not only delivers various products with higher added value but support services, innovation and applied knowledge.
