US: Kiku apples on display at PMA

Over the weekend of October 26, 2012 key people in the fruit and vegetable business convened at the PMA conference in Anaheim California, to discuss upcoming trends and future strategies.

CMI (Columbia Marketing International) and CFP (Columbia Fruit Packers) the licensed grower/marketers in North America along with 2 other sublicensed growers from the Midwest displayed KIKU apples at the PMA exhibition.

The CMI two pound pouch bag program is kicking off this season with the special brand KIKU. The pouch bags come complete with the story of where the apple originated from, the flavor profile, and links to tasty recipes. The bags feature a crisp-clear viewing window to show the consumer the premier fruit they are about to purchase.

This year the event actually coincided with the start of the harvest for US grown KIKU apples and therefore participants were able to taste just picked KIKU. CMI reported that their fruit volumes are growing, and this year show a promising level of coloration, and satisfying maturity. Both characteristics will ensure that consumers enjoy a positive eating experience as the sugar levels in this premium apple will be better than in many other varieties.

CMI and CFP have sublicensed Rice Fruit from Pennsylvania and Applewood Orchards from Michigan to grow KIKU apples back in the Midwest adding to the product CMI is growing in the Pacific Northwest.
