Mexico: Big investment for citrus producers

"To prevent the collapse of the citrus production in the state of Veracruz, an extraordinary one billion pesos investment will be made with the support of the State Government, the Federal Government and producers," said the delegate of SAGARPA, José Vicente Ramírez.

The federal official said that the investment will go towards the construction of a processing plant for the industry, which will be located in the town of Papantla. This plant will be for the union of producers around the country to be able to have citrus exports at an international level.

"It's an investment that starts from the contribution of SAGARPA with 50 million pesos, producers have to contribute another 50 million. The state government pledged 25 million pesos, and on the other side Sargapa has already supported products from Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon and Puebla who are providing 75 million pesos. As a result approximately 200 million will be given."

This investment, which is generated from the partnership of different companies will be added to, so it may increase to a billion pesos, "right now we are in the first part of the project, which is the installation of the first citrus processing plant in Papantla."

The purpose of creation of a processing plant is to take advantage of the complete product much of which is wasted in the field and is not the same trade as for fresh and juice.

"This part can be exploited, because although producers do not have a great demand in the market, it can be processed, and kept untill an international market," said the delegate.
