Fruit specialist from Handelsmaatschappij Jan Oskam went to Madrid this year. "Here we promote mostly Conference pears. The last few years many, especially large pears were exported to Spain. This year it will not be as easy, because Spain is a price sensitive market. Also consumption is less in Spain because of the economic crisis."
The biggest competitor for Conférence pears on the Spanish market comes from Belgium, according to the trader. "There is not much competition in the area of
Conférence from France and Italy. Spain also has Conférence, but then only small sizes. The Dutch and Belgian pears are popular to fill up the seasons and in case of a big difference in price, a change to Dutch pears."
According to Kees, the Conférence pear is popular in Spain. "It is a sweet pear with a long and reasonably good shelf life. The quality is appreciated. Also with apples sweetness is important. Golden are grown plentifully in Spain, but again often they are small sizes to put in a little bag. Specialists then request bigger Dutch sizes."
Volume now is 30% less with the result of high expectations at the growers, who are keeping the pears back. Therefore prices are somewhat artificially high. As a result our export position is not ideal, whether one mentions the Scandinavian, Russian or English market," Kees says.
Kees enjoyed the Fruit Attraction. "I am satisfied with the number of visitors. It definitely pays to be here. Whether new contacts become clients will become clear when we are home again and we start working with this. I also spoke with a lot of
existing clients from all over Europe. I am of the opinion, that for our company this is better than a fair in Hong Kong."
