Turkey: Onion harvest has started in Bandirma

Onion production has only a 2 year history in Bandirma, Balikesir, a city located in northwestern Turkey. The production fields are around 15 million square feet.

The production has been spread throughout the season with early harvest, in-season and late harvest products to ensure that the growers do not flood the market and drive the prices down.

The growers are also selling onion seeds to 45 different countries, including Azerbaijan, Japan and Kosovo. Onion prices respond to supply and demand and the prices in Turkey had skyrocketed 3 months ago due to a shortage of supply. The shortage of supply was the result of heavy rains damaging a majority of early harvest products. Now the growers are also worried about their cost structure due to a major decrease in the value of the Turkish currency, which will increase their production costs, as many of their costs, such as fuel, chemicals and fertilizers are in foreign currency.
