Jan Franje on the falling onion market:

“We currently do as little as possible”

The onion trade is currently in a slump. “We are doing as little as possible. Everything you do costs money,” says Jan Franje from the onion sorting and packing station, Franje Onions. “Bale prices are around 10 cents, and it is going to be difficult to maintain prices at that level. I do not expect to get additional major destinations, and therefore I also do not expect to export large volumes.”

“The trade in red onions is also not doing great, even falling a bit more. The market for organic onions is not doing well either. I think prices are at too high a level, and apparently, our neighbouring countries have plenty of organic onions. The only advantage is that we have excellent quality, but you just cannot make a profit at the moment.”

“Whether there will be a recovery? The market is filled with questions. But we also did not expect Brexit or that Trump would become president. Nothing is impossible. Considering the Trump relations, Russia would be a welcome sales market, but that still seems far off now,” Jan concludes.
