Banana producer to become the president of Haiti

According to the official preliminary results released on Monday, businessman Jovenel Moïse, the candidate supported by ex-president Michel Martelly, won the presidential elections in Haiti that were held on November 20, with 55.67% of the vote.

The head of the Provisional Electoral Council, Uder Antoine, said Moïse had beaten Jude Celestin, the candidate of the opposition that obtained 19.52% of the votes, and Moïse Jean Charles, who achieved 11.04% of the vote, and Maryse Narcisse, who obtained 8.99% of the vote.

Haitian law allows candidates to contest the results of the presidential and legislative elections in the electoral tribunals before the final results are published on 29 December.

This is Jovenel Moïse's debut in politics, as so far he has worked in agriculture, mainly cultivating bananas; an activity that earned him the nickname of banana man.
