Fresh produce distributor gives away 2,000 Thanksgiving dinners to Hunts Point families

Thanksgiving dinner will be a little brighter for hundreds of Hunts Point families this season, thanks to a special meal donation sponsored by Baldor Specialty Foods. In cooperation with the Bronx Community Board #2 and The Point Community Development Center, Baldor Specialty Foods, the Northeast’s leading distributor of fresh produce, reached out to its Hunts Point neighbors by providing tasty. Thanksgiving meals. that were distributed at a community event on Saturday, November 19th.

Working with several of its food vendor partners, Baldor prepared some 2,000 meal boxes filled with “all the fixings” a family of four needs to enjoy a delicious and nutritious Thanksgiving dinner. The meal boxes, which were packed by Baldor employee volunteers, included a large turkey, fruits and vegetables, dinner rolls, milk, juice and a dessert.

Hunts Point is a struggling South Bronx community where 50% of the residents live below the poverty line and many of the remainder barely above that. It’s also home to Baldor’s corporate headquarters and warehouse facility, the hub of Baldor’s distribution network.

TJ Murphy, the CEO of Baldor, is quick to point out that the food drive has been a community effort. Sunkist has donated boxes of fresh citrus fruits, T&A and Mann Packing provided vegetables, Ocean Mist supplied fresh broccoli for the meals and Guida Dairies has given cartons of milk. “Baldor’s is a family company,” said Murphy. “We’ve always considered our employees and neighbors part of the family. Thanksgiving is all about the joy of sharing food with family, and that’s exactly what this event is all about.”
