San Marino to become the first organic country in the world

"We announced the project last year and can now confirm that we expect to fully implement it within the next five years," explained Augusto Michelotti, State secretary for the Territory, Environment and Agriculture in the Repubblica di San Marino.

"Thanks to the collaboration of two great experts in the organic sector - Borri and Bizzocchi - we've drafted a project that will involve all producers. We want San Marino to grow exclusively organic produce. Not only that, the entire state will be organic."

"We started in April 2018 with a first group of producers and will involve all of them over time. Being a small state has its advantages as it's easier to get everyone on board."

One of the obstacles could be the export of organic produce, as San Marino is not part of current trade treaties. "We are working on it as we are negotiating with Brussels so as to be able to export our products all over the European Union."
