Chinese businesses sign strategic watermelon contract with Vietnam

The Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Commerce and Quang Ngai Province, jointly organized the "Quang Ngai conference for the retail and marketing of watermelons and other high-quality agricultural products". The organizers invited fruit traders and other representatives from Guangxi and Yunnan to participate. After the conference ended, the Quang Ngai Department of Industry and Commerce signed a strategic cooperation agreement with a Chinese representative for the retailing of watermelons and other agricultural products.

According to reports, the first watermelon harvest of Quang Ngai in 2018 comes from more than 855 hectares of watermelon plantations. That is more than 300 additional hectares compared to last year. However, the vast majority of that harvest goes to China through border trade. The Quang Ngai watermelon harvest period overlaps with the Guangxi watermelon harvest period, and watermelon retail encounters much difficulty. Statistics show that the Vietnamese watermelon production volume in 2017 reached 1.5 million tons, 20% of which was exported. The watermelon export volume from Vietnam to China accounts for 85-90% of the overall export volume. Watermelon exports predominantly pass through the Tan Than port in Lang Son Province.
