First promotions of Chilean nectarines in China

China opened its doors to Chilean nectarines in February 2017. Since then the industry has been boosting its exports to this market. According to ASOEX's export statistics, Chile exported 67 thousand tons of nectarines between September 2017 to March 2018. Thirty two percent of the nectarines were destined for Asia. More than 17 thousand tons were sent to China, which accounts for 81% of total shipments of nectarines to Asian markets.

In this framework, last week the Association of Fruit Exporters of Chile AG (ASOEX) and ProChile carried out several creative promotional actions for Chilean nectarines in the markets of Shanghai and Jiangnan, China, so as to boost exports. The activities included tastings and exhibitions in wholesale markets and retail outlets, interviews and publications in the local press, a seminar via WeChat, and sports activities in a Shanghai gym, which linked the fruit benefits to the people's health.

Charif Christian Carvajal, the Marketing Director of ASOEX for the Asian and European markets, said: "This is the first time that we have carried out a promotion campaign for Chilean nectarines, and we focused on China, a market we entered last year, where shipments will increase. In this campaign we decided to focus on the benefits of eating Chilean nectarines to get back in shape and to be healthy; after having celebrated the Chinese New Year for more than two weeks.

Carvajal said that the promotional actions had started on March 15, in a prominent gym in Shanghai. "On March 16 we held a seminar for importers and consumers, where we explained the reality of the Chilean export fruit sector, the availability of nectarines in the Chinese market, and our promotion actions.

Finally, on March 17, we launched the product in the wholesale fruit market of Jiangnan, along with a representative of this market and of ProChile in Guangzhou. We've also carried out promotions at the point of sale at Walmart," he said.
