K-PEAR pears begin to spur further exports to the United States

An official from K-PEAR (Korea Pear Export Co., Ltd.) said, "As Korean pears are recognized with high quality, demand in the U.S. is skyrocketing." Founded in 2014, the association currently has a total of 13 export pear production bases in South Korea. The pear production bases consisting of 7 Nonghyup branches and 6 agriculture association corporations are located throughout South Korea, including Asan, Anseong, Gochang, Gokseong, Nonsan, and the world's famous pear city, Naju.

K-PEAR has paid great attention to quality management, including systems in accordance with the Global GAP to meet the specific needs of U.S. consumers. The Global GAP is a system which scientifically verifies the entire process of agricultural produce ranging from sowing to the management following harvest. It aims at overseeing integrated management of nutrition, pests, and safety and sanitary conditions while producing and distributing safe agricultural produce based on sustainable agriculture.

Pears comprise Asian and European varieties. These days, Asian types, particularly pears of Korean origin, are much loved. Consumption of Korean pears in the U.S. is on the rise. In 2017 alone, Korean pears were exported to the U.S. in the amounts to 9,171.4 tons, or US$26,357,600, a 120-time increase from the first 73 tons of exports in 1986.

Korean pears taste good when peeled. Of Korean pears, Naju Pear is cited as the most popular variety with its abundant sugar, juice and active ingredients. Not only Naju but also most Korean pears have high sugar content, moisture and crispy texture, and it is steadily rising in popularity regardless of brand. As such, it is expected that the Korean pear will spread further in the US market in the future.

The pear is one of the representative fruits that are good for health. It contains amino acids and minerals, dietary fiber, sugar, vitamins B1 and B2, and polyphenols. Its rich abundance of water and abalone acid can help relieve hangovers as well as thirst. Polyphenols, especially in the abdomen, are known to help prevent skin aging and prevent cervical cancer in women through antioxidant action. It is a common opinion of the medical community that flavonoids in the pear are also effective against anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects. The unique texture of the pear is due to the stone cells. These stone cells have a similar effect to brushing one's teeth. The stones can also help with the digestive system.

An official from Korea Pear Export said, "K-PEAR is the brand representing Korean pears in the export market, with the trademark registered by the Korean Pear Association," and adding, " K-Pear is also a trustworthy, healthy fruit that is certified under an international certification system that recognizes outstanding agricultural produce that have undergone an element control process." Lastly, he said, "I hope a lot of people enjoy Korean pears' excellence in flavor and nutrition by checking the 'K-PEAR' sticker, a certification of Korean pears."
