There will be shortages next week, reports Wim Isings of Explotaciones Fincas Iberia. Shipments from Southern Spain are severely delayed due to the weather in Spain and France, and so are the orders. "The trucks that left last Monday weren't at their destination by Friday. We usually receive the orders for the next transport on Monday, but this didn't happen either. The programmes discussed are being confused. For herbs in particular this is a problem due to the shorter shelf-life. There is also cauliflower and endives on the road, but those products are stronger."

Endives mainly go to cutting companies in Northern Europe. "We have agreed set programmes for them," says Wim. "There has been no extra demand. Supply and demand are currently balanced but unfortunately there is now a bottle neck in the supply in transport. We have little influence on this. Buyers of endives, mostly cutting companies, pick up products from the growers here. In Perpignan the shipments are redivided and the products go in different directions towards the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark."
Herb plantation
The herb programme is also going as expected. "Unlike last year we are able to supply herbs according to the agreed upon programmes. It was very wet last year and the harvest was largely lost due to the mud. This season wasn't as bad with the rain. But the hiccup in transport will also disrupt programmes here."
Cauliflower remains difficult this season. "Due to a lack of water and the cold nights the growth of cauliflower is being slowed. Calibre 6 is desirable on the Dutch market and this is where there are shortages in particular. The transport problems are added to this."
Broccoli is a smaller product for Explotaciones Fincas Iberia this year. "We mainly agreed programmes in the United Kingdom for broccoli. There is nothing special to report. Apart from the price in the Netherlands. It is often lower than on the auction in Spain," concludes Wim.
