Hervé Hel, TopAlliance:

France: “Lower garlic prices due to European surplus”

According to Hervé Hel, managing director of the French company TopAlliance, garlic prices in France are decreasing because of an oversupply on the European and worldwide market. Hervé: “The garlic we find on the European market is mainly produced in Spain.”

Annually, TopAlliance produces 10,000 tonnes of garlic. The company sells different varieties including violet, pink and white garlic and is the French leader regarding the commercialization of pink garlic, which is produced in the Lautrec region. “Pink garlic is our most expensive product for which there exists a significant demand. Our pink variety has a better shelf-life than other varieties and also has a better taste. It’s strong and refined at the same time. Pink garlic will satisfy any starred chef and consumers like it a lot.”

Another luxury product sold by TopAlliance is the violet garlic. “Still, everything depends on the official quality marks. When you are labelled Label rouge, AOP or IGP this affects the prices in a positive way.”

Céline Vézian, technical and quality manager at TopAlliance

The company serves a diverse clientele. “60% comes from the large-scale distribution and 25% from wholesale networks. Another 15% of our products are intended for export within Europe.”
