20% year on year volume growth for Polish banana importer

The global banana market has been increasingly less predictable in recent years, with irregular weather conditions negatively affecting supply and demand, along with blurring the lines between the traditional high and low periods in the season. This has made the seasons difficult to plan and predict. Despite all of the recent challenges, Rafal Bury from Polish importer Targban, said that the company continues to be positive about expanding their banana operation.

"We are planning to continue growing and gaining share in our domestic market in 2018, among other things by responding to our clients’ needs and introducing new products. As a testimony of this, February saw the extension of our product line with the introduction of Catalina® Baby and Catalina® Red bananas. Both products designed to cater to a niche, yet interesting and evolving segment of the market.

In 2018 we will focus on diversifying our portfolio of origins and suppliers and products as well, to continue to develop more sustainable ways of sourcing our fruit," shared Rafal.

2017 was an important year for the banana category at Targban. The company successfully introduced organic bananas under their own Catalina® brand to the Polish market. The year also brought a record year-on-year 20% volume growth for their premium, yellow banana sales.

"The secret to our success in a difficult period is predominantly due to the establishment of significant relationships with new retail clients. We believe that this progress is the best proof that the superior quality of our product, as well as consistently excellent service levels, remain in high demand. Last but not least, our green sales grew rapidly last year to represent 12% of our combined premium banana sales," concluded Rafal.

Growing at a rate of 100% over the last 5 years, premium bananas are Targban's biggest product by volume, representing 25% of total sales.
