Spain: Mercabarna expects to sell 8% more calçots

Mercabarna's fruit and vegetable wholesalers expect calçot sales to increase by up to 8% and exceed 14 million units, which would make it the best selling season for that precious onion.

In a statement, it was reported that the calçot season will last until April.

The sales of this product have been on the rise for several years and wholesalers say that this is due to both the increase in domestic demand and the growth of exports to some European countries.

In this season, sales abroad continue their upward trend and will go from representing 5% of the total to 15% in the current campaign.

As regards the destination of these exports, the increase in demand from the London market stands out the most, with France, Belgium and Germany also importing significant volumes.

"We expect a good season because of the quality of the product, the stability of the prices and also the growing demand. We now hope for the weather not to spoil our prospects," explains Josep Pañella, one of the almost fifty Mercabarna wholesalers specialised in this product.

According to estimations of the Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Association of Mercabarna (AGEM), between 25% and 30% of the total volume marketed will go to the catering sector.

More than seven million calçots shipped by Mercabarna's Central Fruit and Vegetable Market will be certified by the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Calçot de Valls.
