Butternut squash from California in good supply

Butternut squash supply is good currently but since Hurricane Irma slowed down both supply and quality in Florida, Athena Farms is acquiring butternut squash out California. “Right now we’re not having a (supply) problem at all,” says Robert Hutchinson of Athena Farms. His program runs until December 31 to meet the demand for the winter. “Quality is looking good,” he adds.

Avocados, which are another of Athena’s commodities is one that stood out for Hutchinson over the course of 2017. “We sell a lot of avocados,” he says. They have been up and down in supply and in price. “But right now they’re really good and the quality is good.” He recalls them fetching up to $90 per case in the summer.

Greenberg Fruit reported at the end of last week that avocados have “escalated” and reports ongoing issues with supply from Mexico stemming from continued closures of packing sheds: “The result of a politically-driven decision made by the board of elected growers in Mexico.”
