Italy: Low demand for potatoes in the south

While demand for potatoes in the Bologna area was good a few weeks ago despite the low prices, the situation is not very good in southern Italy (Calabria, Sicily and Puglia). At least this is what a producer from Calabria reports.

"The market is at a standstill due to the presence of European produce at a lower price from France and Germany in particular. European potatoes sell at €0.15-0.20/kg on arrival against the at least €0.30/kg of the local productions. Our costs have doubled and we're not selling."

According to the operator, there have been years when foreign growers have had more availability and shipped more produce all over Italy. "Little can be done in such a globalised market. We can offer good quality but cannot compete as regards quantity."

"November is slow anyway and things should improve from 8th December onward. January and February are much better. We are hoping for colder temperatures, which should push sales. Currently temperatures are in line with the seasonal average."

Harvesting is almost over in Sila. "It's the last stage of the harvesting of yellow Agria potatoes, as the rain in November slightly delayed operations."

The producer also reports that "at least 50% of potatoes from Sila are destined to the processing industry."
