US: South American stone fruit arrivals expected soon

Shipments of peaches and nectarines from South America are imminent, as suppliers in the US await arrivals to begin distributing to the market. The first shipments are due to arrive the week of December 11, with small volumes in containers before bigger volume hits around New Year.

"The peach and nectarine market is practically on hold at the moment as we await the first shipments from South America," said Eric Cole of Sierra Produce. "In terms of stone fruit, there is still very little amounts of late plums from California available. The first containers from South America should arrive during the week of December 11. We expect it to be very light on in volume until the break-bulk shipments begin. These are expected on the West Coast just after Christmas, whereas the East Coast should start to see them before Christmas."

According to Marcial Hernandez, of Pacific Trellis Fruit, the shipments reflect a slight delay in production, due to a cooler spring season in Chile. "For both peaches and nectarines, the seasons are expected to last from December to March," he said. "Chile had a good winter, but with spring being a bit colder, it has caused a delay in production."

In the lead up to the Holiday period, Cole said expectations are for demand to pick up, especially once the new fruit hits stores. Following the rush, the season should balance out and maintain good, firm pricing.

"We expect early demand to be strong by Christmas," Cole said. "Any new fruit will be snapped up quickly. At this stage though, we won't have an accurate picture on the market until the shipments arrive and the market for the South American stone fruit becomes more apparent."

Pacific Trellis Fruit said they are set to introduce an Heirloom peach variety to the United States this season for the first time. Hernandez mentioned that this peach has been rising in popularity in Europe in recent years and the company are hoping for a good reception when they make their way into US stores.

"We are currently offering the great eating Heirloom Peaches in limited volume out of Chile this season," he said. "This variety has gained popularity in the previous years in Europe and we are excited to offer it for the first time in the US market. The Heirloom Peaches are sweet and aromatic with a beautiful orange color skin and round shape."
