Wholesale merchant Mustafa Kamcili:

“There are currently too many products on the market”

Raspberries, blueberries and blackberries are now available all year round. Both demand and supply are rising every year. And that can become a problem in the long run, says Mustafa Kamcili of Morgenland GmbH & Co. KG. “Supply is increasing faster than demand, and normally prices will then go down. If the demand should decrease now, it can quickly lead to big price drops.”

“There are currently too many products on the market, as demand has generally declined over recent weeks. This does not only affect berries, but all fruits and vegetables,” said Kamcili, who has been the only fruit merchant in the Düsseldorf Flower Hall since last April. If demand subsequently decreases, that would be very problematic. “This year we already had some difficulties with the sales of blueberries during spring and now it is difficult to get them, because the fruits have to be brought in from overseas. There is too little demand for the relatively new kiwi berries, as this variety is not too well known to the customer.”

All year round product
Kamcili wonders whether some products really need to be offered all year round. “Today I received a lot of overseas merchandise. Strawberries from Peru, blackberries from Mexico and blueberries from Argentina. And also some raspberries from Spain.” According to the experienced trader, it's a matter of education: “Young people nowadays are raised with the idea that a complete assortment is available twelve months a year. And that, as long as there is demand all year round, there will also be products from all over the world.”

Kamcili emphasizes that there are hardly any products that can not be considered a year-round article. “Asparagus maybe. Its season runs from the end of March to June and then it is really over. Although we currently have asparagus from Peru on offer. But there is hardly any demand for them.”

Leafy clementines
The Morgenland GmbH & Co. firm focuses primarily on fruit and tropical fruits. Apart from the headquarters in Dortmund, the company is also represented on the Düsseldorf wholesale market since earlier this year. Their specialized offers currently include citrus fruits, grapes, exotic fruits, nuts and dried fruits. At the moment, one of their specialties is the leafy clementine from Spain.
