Wholesale market union and city discuss the future

Germany: The Düsseldorf wholesale market of the future

On Friday the 20th of October, representatives of the city of Düsseldorf and its wholesale market union met to discuss the future situation of the market business at the Ulmenstraße. The subjects of the discussion were the ways in which they could modernise what is considered old-fashioned and the parts of the buildings that are worn-out. The union has come up with an architectural and economic concept as the basis for a secure future.

The Düsseldorf wholesale market site is changing. The wholesale market of the future will be different from the traditional location at the Ulmenstraße that exists today. Much can be improved: the state of the buildings, the waste management, the energy supply, the material flow, the modernisation of the infrastructure in and around the site, forward-looking and environmentally friendly transportation, decreasing of pollution and the entire appearance, to name just a few aspects. Together they are working towards a solution.

The wholesale market traders and production companies in Düsseldorf are the professionals who carry out the trade for consumers, gastronomy, large-scale consumers and retail trade in the region. They play an important role for the "state capital of Düsseldorf" in terms of the life standard with fresh, healthy and varied food. Around 1,200 people work at the wholesale market. The yearly turnover is moving towards 500 million euros.
The traders at the wholesale market in Düsseldorf have been working together since 2015 on the wholesale market of the future: user-oriented, with modern logistics, environmentally friendly, attractive for new users and profitable.

The participants agreed dat the "new start" of the wholesale market business can only be successful if all stakeholders work closely together. "The clock is ticking in order not get the connection between the wholesale market and the trade wrong," said the spokesperson of the wholesale market union Peter Renë Hecker and specifically asked for hard work on the project and early decision-making.

The next meeting is set to take place before the end of this year.
