Growers see strong pricing as customers seek out hot peppers

Hot pepper growers have enjoyed favorable weather conditions in Mexican growing regions this season. Additionally, they are enjoying a solid market with producers pleased with strong prices as supplies run short.

"We grow our hot peppers in Chiapas as well as Baja California, depending on the time of year," said Rene Rodriguez, of BJ Brothers Produce. "Major varieties such as Jalapeno and Serrano are available all year round, while Poblanos are available most of the year, with the exception of August and September. The weather has been great for our area of operations which span 1200 hectares. It hasn't been too hot or cold and because we are close to sea level, the temperatures have been moderate. Therefore we have seen good yields and excellent quality coming through. So far, we have also escaped any affects of tropical storms and hurricanes that have affected other producers in Central America."

Strong prices as market runs short
As the market runs thin on supply and consumers look for more hot peppers, prices have been strong and look to continue as quality supply and decent yields come into the market. "There are not really many peppers around the market at the moment," Rodriguez observed. "Consumers are shopping around looking for them, so it's currently a favorable market for growers. Jalapenos are going for around 45c/lb, Poblanos are 65c/lb, and we have Caribe which are also sitting at around 45c/lb."

Another type of hot pepper, the Shihito, is gaining popularity as customers seek alternatives to mainstream varieties. "We recently brought the Shihito pepper onto the market," Rodriguez added. "It's a long, slender variety that is not really spicy. The Shihito is excellent for frying and adding to stews and it's growing in popularity as customers, such as individuals or restaurants, look to mix up flavors in popular dishes. The current market price for them is $1-$1.20/lb."
