Less food waste with PerfoLid

“Because of this packaging, fresh produce can continue to breathe”

A new packaging, called PerfoLid was recently introduced to combat food waste. “This packaging is resealable and ensures fruit and vegetables stay fresh longer, and it therefore results in less food waste. Waste in fruit and vegetables is a major problem: because of the limited shelf life, almost 50 per cent of all fruit and vegetables is thrown out,” says Ivo Hendriks from Perfotec.

Breathing
He continues: “The PerfoLid packaging is suitable for many different products, such as soft fruit, vegetables and salads. Another major advantage is that vegetables can be steamed in this packaging. Additionally, the tray looks great as presentation material and it can be reused.” Small holes are made in the sealed part of the packaging. “Because of these holes, the product can continue breathing. After all, fresh products need to be able to breathe. Each type of fruit or vegetables has its own breathing pattern, which is also called the breathing frequency. The necessary breathing frequency is often solved provisionally by means of packaging in bags or in clamshell packaging with large holes. A good regulation of the oxygen content for fresh products plays a crucial part, however, to reach the ideal shelf life for retailers and consumers. PerfoTec has found a solution for that regulation by preserving the optimum protective atmosphere in the packaging itself. This solution is known as Active Modified Atmosphere Packaging (AMAP). We ensure that the product falls asleep.”

The companies Sealpack, Naber Plastics and PerfoTec are members of the Save Food Initiative, and are in a special tent at the Interpack, in which food waste innovations are also on display. Selapack takes care of the sealed part of the packaging, PerfoTec is responsible for the perforation and Naber supplies the EasyLid Tray.
