Central America's watermelon exports grew by 17%

Export variations 
Between January and September 2016, Central America exported 172,000 tons of fresh watermelon worth $43 million. This volume is 17% higher than the 147,000 tons exported in the same period of 2015, which generated a revenue of $35 million.

Exports by country 
In the first three quarters of 2016, Honduras was the leading exporter of fresh watermelons with 56,819 tons, followed by Costa Rica with 44,388 tons, Panama with 37,015 tons, Guatemala with 32,188 tons, and Nicaragua with 2,035 tons. El Salvador did not record exports during the first nine months of 2016.

Price of regional exports 
Between January 2012 and September 2016 the seasonal average price per kilo was evident. The lowest price, $ 0.05 per kilo, was recorded in October and November 2015, and the highest price was recorded in March 2012, when it reached $ 0.34 per kilo.

Export destinations 
During the first three quarters of 2016, 31% of the volume exported from Central America was destined for the Netherlands, 30% to the US, 2% to Belgium, and 1% to Spain.
