Spain: Lidl opens first store in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

The supermarket chain Lidl has opened its first store in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria after an investment of 6.2 million Euro and has hired 40 people.

Lidl arrives in the capital of Gran Canaria with its most sustainable store model; "a milestone in the history of the company, which already has seven stores in Gran Canaria," as reported by the company in a press release.

Thus, this supermarket will have the new store image that Lidl is betting on, which is characterised by "its modernity, ample space and sustainability, thus improving the customer's shopping experience."

Moreover, various measures to ensure energy and environmental efficiency have been implemented, including LED lighting or the use of thermal insulation systems.

Furthermore, in order to facilitate access to the facilities, the company has built a two story car park with 180 places, and business hours will be from Monday to Saturday between 08.30 and 22.00.

The store was officially inaugurated on Wednesday in an event chaired by the Councillor of Industry, Commerce and Craft of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Minerva Alonso, accompanied, among others, by the management team of Lidl Canarias, in an event that allowed the institutional representatives to get to know the new facilities and enjoy a special menu with Lidl products elaborated by Canarian chef Aridane Rivero.

Thus, Lidl is committed to the Canary Islands, insisting that those visiting the new store will find "a wide range of local products under the label "Compro Canario" ("I Buy Canary Products").

In this way, the retailer seeks to boost the development of local suppliers, in a way that guarantees "the maximum freshness and quality of its products."

They added that Lidl currently collaborates with more than 50 local suppliers with the aim of promoting the development of local products and encouraging the enrichment of the productive fabric of the islands. Lidl has been present in the Canary Islands since 2010, when it opened its first 12 stores.

With the new store in Las Palmas, the retailer already has more than 20 stores spread throughout the Canary archipelago, giving employment to more than 750 people.
