Mexico: Lack of US apple imports benefits Chihuahua

David Dajlala, the Secretary of Economy, stated that there were currently no apple imports from the United States because of the rising dollar and the tariffs on said imports.

As a result, Dajlala said, producers have been able to accommodate the local apple in the market with no foreign competition; a situation that benefits Chihuahua's apple sector.

Since December 2015, he said, apple imports have been subjected to 2 to 24% tariff.

"A new company will have to pay 20.84% on apple imports and the companies that demonstrate before the SAT and producers that they import apples at a legal price will have to pay a 2% tariff," said the Secretary of Economy.

He also said that there were no apple imports because, since the dollar increased, it just wasn't profitable. As a result, he added, producers from Chihuahua had been able to accommodate their production throughout all the national market.
