“Shelf life is of first importance with our packaging”

Fruit and vegetables in printed, upright pouch with window

Presenting fruit and vegetables in a transparant, upright pouch is still fairly new. “Every type of fruit or vegetable that is now packaged in a cup or cardboard box can also be packaged in one of these special pouches. Tomatoes are currently already being packaged in them, and we recently also received requests for chicory, cherries and other products,” says Katrien van de Weghe of Bastin-Pack. The packaging producer is specialised in flexo-printing on films with a high barrier and laminates. “High barriers and laminate film extend the shelf life of the packaged product. Shelf life is the first matter of importance with our packaging. Atmospheric humidity, clearness and anti-condensation characteristics of the film have to be good.”

Transparent and resealable
During the Fruit Logistica 2016, Cooperative Hoogstraten presented its new corporate identity, including its new packaging, the transparant, upright bag filled with tomatoes. Hoogstraten is not the only one who thinks this packaging is interesting for vegetables, there are more interested parties. Van de Weghe explains the pouch is perforated: “A breathable packaging minimises waste. Furthermore, the consumer can see the product, because part of the pouch is left unprinted. This creates a very attractive packaging. Moreover, the pouch has a zip, making it resealable and user-friendly.”

Hoogstraten: on-the-go
Natalie Snijders of Hoogstraten says they present their cherry tomato, Bellino, in this packaging. “We chose this packaging because it minimises waste. Besides, it is transparent, meaning the tomatoes are very visible.” The packaging is easy to bring with you. “We anticipate the on-the-go principle with it. In the long term, we are planning to develop a display to place near the cash register, so that consumers can get the tomatoes as an impulse purchase.”

Onderscheid
“Bastin-Pack produces a wide range of flexible packaging: both pre-shaped pouches and as wrappers on a roll. We are the first in the Benelux to be BRC-IoP-certified, and have been since 2004. Bastin-Pack offers customer-oriented and personalised opportunities, in accordance with EC regulations, imposed by food safety. This all in large, medium and small runs with fast delivery times thanks to the stocks available in different qualities of high barrier films. In this manner we can anticipate requests from our customers and any promotional actions. Location is another trump: customers are invited to check and approve a preprint at the press. We are only satisfied when our customer is satisfied.”

Future
Van de Weghe continues: “Besides existing customers, including world food chains, we have the intention to further expand our list of clients in Europe. For that, we want to become increasingly more customer-oriented with shorter delivery times, and we want to offer advanced packaging in accordance with the market. Besides conventional packaging we also cover bio-based packaging, also in high-quality laminate film.” Bastin-Pack is, according to its customers, progressive and future-oriented. “This expresses itself by offering high-quality printing that equals helio-printing. Last year we were given a first place for this, awarded by EFTA, for the best HD flexo-printer on film in the Benelux. This year we received the second European place, awarded by FTA Europe, as best printer in HD flexo on film in Europe.”
