Honduras to import approx 11 million dollars worth of avocados

According to the authorities of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG), Honduras will import around 11 million dollars in avocados this year due to the high demand there is in the country.

Francisco Herrera, the coordinator of agribusiness at the SAG, said "we currently have an unmet demand by the internal production."

The areas of the country that have been producing Hass avocado are the high regions between the west and the east, such as El Paraiso, he said.

The increase in plantings of Hass avocado started nearly five years ago, following the losses there were in the coffee harvest because of pests.

According to the agricultural census there are around 1,500 producers, excluding small entrepreneurs at the family garden level.
