Germany: large increase on organic growers

Organic agriculture grew stably in Germany once again in 2015. This shows from the annual reports from the German states. The number of Dutch agricultural companies that produce organically was 24,736, which is 5.7% more than in the previous year (2014: 23,398). The organic agricultural area of 1,088,838 grew by 3.9% compared to 2014 (2014: 1,047,633 ha).

The German minister of Economics Christian Schmidt stated: "Within the organic agriculture the number of companies and the area is stable. The market is also growing, in 2015 the organic market in Germany reached a turnover of over eight billion Euro, in which the tendency is strongly rising. These figures show that organic is increasingly popular among consumers, the organic agriculture is an important pillar within the German agricultural and food economy, besides conventional agriculture. My goal is to help organic agriculture in Germany move forward. For this reason I initiated the future strategy for organic agriculture and this is why I am working in Brussels to get a fast revision of the EU farming regulation with which we can strengthen the trust of the consumers and the organic food economy. Buyers have to be able to rely on one thing: what says organic has to be organic."

In total the share of the organic companies in the total agricultural companies in the past year was 8.7% (2014: 8.3%). The organic agricultural area was 6.5% of the total agricultural area (2014: 6.3%). In total there were 38,259 growers, processors, importers and trade companies operating in the organic sector in 2015.
