China is Chile's main cherry buyer

Chile’s cherry export to China has boomed. Export to other destinations, including Europe, has slightly decreased. This is according to new export data released by Sim Fruit, the Chilean fruit export association.

During the season, Chile has exported 83,298 tons to various international markets. 84% of the total has been shipped to China, the largest buyer by far. Amongst all import ports, Shenzhen took the biggest share. Total export to China amounted to 70,051 tons, 97% of total cherry exports shipped to Asian markets. Export to the US decreased from 8.5% to to 6.7% of the total and export to Europe only reached 2%.

Chile’s cherry production is expected to increase, and could potentially hit 130,000 tons in 2017.
