"Gert-Jan van den Heuvel: "More export from Panama due to larger area"

First receipt of watermelons from Panama

Today VerDi Import received the first five containers of Quetzali melons. "We have the first melons from Panama. Yes we're early on the market and yes, the market isn't the way we want it, but Panama can't do anything about that. The mood is set by Brazil, who shipped too much throughout the season and is still doing so. This is a shame, but there's no point crying over spilt milk," Gert-Jan van den Heuvel.

We hope to speak to a new group by offering Panama melons early. Customers who can no longer deal with the Brazilian quality and who are tired of the (old) stocks. With a brix of 12-13 we are convinced we will certainly get new customers," the importer continues. "The volume of watermelon will be scaled up every week and next week we expect to ship the first yellow melons."

"As a larger area of melons was planted in Panama, we expect more melons to be sent to Europe compared to last year. A reason for importers to work with more programmes. We hope the importers will find their connection to the retail," concludes Gert-Jan.
