New cargo service Costa Rica - El Salvador

According to Prensa Latina, By the end of January, Costa Rica and El Salvador will start a new ferry cargo service that will link both countries in order to facilitate and lower freight costs.

The itinerary includes departures from El Salvador on Monday, Wednesday and Friday; and from Costa Rica on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, allowing the transfer of cargo among both Central American countries.

According to reports, the ships from the Odiel shipping company will stop from four to six hours at every port to complete the loading and unloading of goods.

"Each ship will have the capacity to transport 100 trucks in every trip," said the Deputy Minister of Transport of Costa Rica, Sebastian Urbina.

He also made emphasis on the cost reduction this new system would bring, as each load would go from 1,500 to 700 dollars, and there would be a decrease in procedures and the overcrowding at the border post of PeƱas Blancas.

The new service will decrease the time it takes to move the cargo between both countries, from the current 2-5 days it takes to only 16 hours, thus promoting an increase in competitiveness in the export sector.
