Mohammed Mukthar, “Früchte Heep” fruit importing company

"Unsatisfactory fig season"

“The fig season was unsatisfactory for us,” states Mohammed Mukthar of the company Früchte Heep, “This year the availability of figs on the market was low and that has a negative influence on the trade.” The wholesaler imports his figs mainly from Turkey, but during the height of the season France and Greece supply the fruit importer in Cologne too.

Fewer products, less interest
The season is slowly ending and that reflects in the demand of the consumer, states the importer. “The end of the season is not only noticeable in the low supply of the figs but also in the lower demand,” tells Mukthar, “The customers’ interest is steadily declining.”

A new focus
“At the moment citrus fruits have the customers interest.” Especially Spanish produce dominates the trade during the winter. The fig sales pick up during the winter, states the wholesaler. “The fresh fig season ends, however during Christmas and in the winter, dried figs are popular,” continues Mukthar, “Dried fruit in general is in high demand then, dried apricots for instance are popular too.”
