Chile : New record season for cherry exports

Cherry producers in Chile hope that harvest will reach 140,000 tons for the 2015-2016 season, i.e. +15% in production. This figure would confirm the latest forecasts from the Chilean Export Association who estimated potential export to reach 120,000 tons (i.e. +15 to +20%).

Most of the volume is destined for the Chinese market and 90% of the volume is commercialised between December and February. Opportunities should open from other Asian markets such as Japan and South Korea, where negotiations are already underway.

The sector believes acreage is increasing by 1,500 hectares to 2,500 hectares per year, and that acreage could reach over 18,000 hectares this season. So far, only 40% of their potential is under production, and the aim is to reach 150,000 tons by 2018/2020.
