Organic sector continues to grow in France

Organic farming and organic consumption is increasing in France. Between January-July 2015, the number of organic farms has increased by 8% compared to the same period in 2014.

Agricultural land farmed organically is expected to reach over 1.25 million hectares, by the end of 2015 in France i.e. 4.6% of used agricultural land (compared to only 2% in 2007) and a 10% increase compared to 2014.

France represents 10% of organically farmed acreage in the 28 EU countries.

The organic market in France will represent €5.5 billion at the end of 2015, i.e. a 10% increase compared to 2014.

Agence Bio says that “With almost 9 out of 10 French consuming organic products, of which 6 out of 10 is at least once a month, organic consumption is anchored in French people’s habits”. 76% of organic produce consumed is “made in France”.

The amount of professionals in the organic sector is increasing annually (producers, processors, distributors, importers, exporters, controllers….). The sector directly represents 100,000 direct full time jobs.
