Italy: Slow sales and low prices for table grapes

"We expected a better season and did not think sales could be so difficult. There is too much fruit on the market - peaches are still available and local Royal Gala apples are early," explains Riccardo Bargellini from Gobbi Gino. "

Italia grapes

"The Apulian table grape campaign started twenty days ago and sales are slow. The Victoria variety, which has good colour and big fruit, is being sold at €1.30/kg. The colour of Italia 2 is not excellent but with a good batch it can reach €1.50-1.70/kg. Italia is sweet, but prices do not go beyond €1/kg because colour and taste are not enough - bunches have to look good too. Pizzuttella has a nice colour but grapes should be bigger, nonetheless it reaches €1.50/kg, which is not so bad."

The fact that sales are slow is affecting shelf-life: "after two days, the colour is not so good and stems are dry. This used to happen in the past, but sales used to be quicker and stocks were sold every day. Now we sell them over a couple of days and we need to lower the price as we go."

"Quantities should decrease in the next few weeks with the end of summer fruit campaign. We are not expecting better prices but sales should be easier."
